I met FUHNETIK at a show in Phoenix a few years back. I remember thinking that this young dude sounded promising just by the way he talks about music. I was right. I checked out his stuff and it was really well produced and super heavy! Since then I have made sure to always be up to date on what was popping up on FUHNETIKs Soundcloud. Recently, word spread that Corbin was working on an EP so I thought it was time to bug him for an interview to see what was going on. He accepted! Check it.
BUT FIRST
Just released – Chasing Sirens
Hope you guys like the deep end of the pool
Real Name. No gimmicks: Corbin Bryant
Age: 20
City: Phoenix, AZ
One Lyfe: If I was a DJ/Producer I think my main reason would be the chicks. Whats yours?!
FUHNETIK: Hahaha! I mainly got started out of boredom to be honest – when you are 15 having full control over every little aspect of sound feels really empowering. Now the motivation to DJ and Produce is a desire to be able to be able to do what I love for a living someday – and to be able to translate my own music to other people for them to enjoy. There isn’t a much better feeling than watching other people enjoy something that you’ve created yourself.
One Lyfe: 15? Wow!? What did you listen to growing up?
FUHNETIK: I had a big mix of influences growing up – my mom was real big into the whole punk and grunge thing when I was a kid, and my dad always listened to the golden age trance and techno from the 90s. I naturally fell in love with all of it and everything in between. By the time I was in my teens artists like Aphex Twin and Burial had really inspired me to start making electronic music.
One Lyfe: Oh man. Aphex Twin. Have you seen the video for Windowlicker?!
FUHNETIK: Of course! It is weird to think they actually aired that on MTV – back when the M actually stood for something. ;p
One Lyfe: What bass music is influencing you right now?
FUHNETIK: There is a ton of stuff happening right now in the Bass scene – You are starting to see that people are growing tired of pure tearout and are moving toward more rhythm heavy music. Producers like 50 Carrot, Megalodon, D2 and the likes are really influencing my current “heavy” side of production. As far as the mellow stuff goes, my influences will always be producers like Clubroot, Burial, Skream and the other classics. Call it nostalgia I guess
One Lyfe: I hear you’re a Deftones fan. What’s your favorite album?
FUHNETIK: Adrenaline!
One Lyfe: Classic.
One Lyfe: The new EP you’re working on has been kind of secret and has us all wondering. So… What can we expect?!
FUHNETIK: Yes some of the details are even a bit secret from myself as far as release dates and the status of this last collaborative track on the EP… – All I can say in terms of what you can expect is quite a bit of diversity in comparison to what you’ve heard before from the spotlight FUHNETIK releases. A chill out track here… Maybe a couple deep rollers, and possibly a couple more tuned with dance floor destruction in mind.
One Lyfe: Every producer has a vice. Something that keeps them awake in front of the computer. What’s yours?
FUHNETIK: Definitely Caffeine. Walmart just had a sale on the big 16 oz cans of Mountain Dew and I scooped up 36 of em
One Lyfe: That’s so bad for you.
FUHNETIK: Tell me about it.
One Lyfe: When I was a kid I bought a 36 pack of Red Bull and after that my friends gave me an intervention.
FUHNETIK: I’m waiting for the day when I come home to a room full of my friends and family with my stash of Dew out on the living room table.
One Lyfe: This is my favorite month because I am a huge Halloween fan. If you could pick one slasher movie to produce an alternate soundtrack for what would it be?
FUHNETIK: Not exactly a slasher movie, but Aliens has definitely been my favorite horror movie since I was a little kid – I have even used a few samples from the Alien series in some of my own music… Being able to score a soundtrack for that movie would be awesome.
One Lyfe: When you have a little kid his gangster baby name will be?
FUHNETIK: C-Dubz
One Lyfe: HA! Awesome. I like C-Dubz but lets do this my way. Let’s end this one MADLIBS style.
FUHNETIK : Let’s do it!
One Lyfe: 1. Favorite DJ name 2. Describing word 3. Full name of your favorite cartoon character
FUHNETIK: 1. Figure (I’ve always loved that alias for whatever reason) 2. bouncy 3. Scooby Doo
One Lyfe: Your NEW gangster baby name for your first born is…
Figure “Bouncy” Doo
One Lyfe: Hell yeah. No one is going to mess with that kid. Thank Corbin! Can’t wait to hear the new EP!
FUHNETIK: Thanks for having me!
One Lyfe: I get the last word…
FUHNETIK: bahahah alright

[...] The last song on our STYW playlist is “Chasing Shadows” by our very own FUHNETIK. His new track, “Chasing Shadows” has a classic dubstep feel to it, with a heavy “wubwubwub” bass and eerie female vocals. This is another tune perfect for chilling out while you’re trying to comprehend what happened the night before, and how you got home. FUHNETIK has an EP in the works and will be releasing more music very soon, so stay familiar with him. You can check out his interview with our friend Jake over at Onelyfe.com here. [...]
